Hyottoko (male mask)

is the name given to the face pulled by an old man blowing on a fire. he closes up the eye closest to the heart to stop ash flying into it. it is not a symbol of a lowly servant, but instead reflects strong family ties, where all members contribute for the communal benefit.

Story line is that Fox and Hyottoko are both in love with Okame the most beautiful girl in the village. Fox steals her, but Hyottoko wins her back through his dancing. His twisted face gives a positive message that you don’t have to have typically attractive features to win the day.
